The first island-Municipality of Greece that becomes Bike Friendly

 

Leros has been certified as the first island in Greece that is friendly to cyclists with the Bike Friendly Destination label, which is under the auspicies of the Ministry of Tourism.

In a special ceremony that took place at the City Hall of Leros on Friday, September 25, 2020 , the Mayor of Leros Mr. Kolias Mixalis, received the label from Mrs. Vicky Karantzavelou, public relations representative of NATTOUR AMKE and representative of the “Bike Friendly Destination” certification label, in the presence of the Deputy Mayor of Financial and Administrative Services Mr. Dimitris Kastis , the Deputy Mayor of Organization Planning and Informatics Mr. Kyriakos Grekos, the President of DOPAISAR Mrs Marietta Kanari , members of the Leros Cycling Club and the local Media.

The certification of the first Greek island as a friendly destination for cyclists, makes Leros a pioneering destination in the effort for sustainable development of tourism.

Leros, an exceptional natural and historical setting has all the certified requirements of a cycling destination.

The variety of cycling routes of the island offers amazing cycling routes for all tastes and with the appropriate route marking, the favorable morphology of the terrain of the routes and the excellent climate of Leros, make the island the “ultimate destination” for individual or organized cyclists, as well as in general for the friends of special-thematic forms of tourism.

The Mayor of Leros Mr. Kolias during the event emphasized that “the Municipality of  Leros visualizes an alternative , sustainable model of tourism development. Our goal is to highlight the uniqueness of our island worldwide”.

The public relations representative of NATTOUR AMKE, Mrs. Vicky Karantzavelou stated that “Leros has all the premises to develop thematic tourism that focuses on nature and can offer to her visitors. With the Bike Friendly Destination label, Leros will be promoted for cycling tourism throughout the tourism industry”.

Keeping alive the traditional cultural identity as well as the historical memory , with its unique historical monuments and facilities, with respect for  the natural environment, with a big variety of trails and cycling routes and with its clear blue crystal waters, Leros, the island of Artemi , remains an unexplored land, an attraction in the northern Dodecanese, now also by bike!
